Two locals Arrested at Katunayake Airport for Illegally Smuggling gold worth 28 million

Late last night (10 th July), officers from the police Anti-Narcotics Division successfully apprehended two businessmen at the arrivals terminal of Katunayake Airport. The individuals were caught attempting to smuggle a significant stock of jewelry, valued at twenty-eight million rupees, into Sri Lanka.

The suspects are residents of the Wellampitiya area of Colombo, who regularly flew back and forth to foreign countries to import and sell goods from foreign countries.

The suspects were caught when the duo arrived on the AI-273 flight of Indian Airlines from Chennai, India. The vigilant officers from the police anti-narcotics department conducted a thorough search of their luggage, leading to the discovery of approximately 1,780 grams of gold jewellery.

Following the arrest, the two individuals, along with the confiscated jewellery, were promptly handed over to the Katunayake airport customs officials. The officials will carry out further investigations into the matter to ascertain the full extent of the illegal activities and identify any potential accomplices.
