Colombo Chief Magistrate Prasanna Alwis yesterday sentenced a young man who was found guilty of stealing two denim trousers from a readymade clothing store in Kurunduwatta to one year in prison with hard labour. The Court convicted the suspect after a lengthy trial regarding this theft that occurred in 2017.
This punishment meted out to a young man named R. P. D. Chamara, a resident of Colombo 8. Earlier, several warrants were issued against the suspect due to his continued failure to appear before the courts.
The suspect had reportedly tried to exit the store wearing two stolen denim pants worth 19,900 rupees, but he had been nabbed by the security officials.
The Kurunduwatta Police had arrested the suspect and the Court had released him on bail.
He was sentenced after a six year trial.
