NMRA issues guidelines to pharmacies

The National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) has issued strict operational guidelines to all pharmacies in the country, which will be monitored by the Authority. More information on these guidelines can be found on their website nmra.gov.lk.

Some of these conditions include maintaining the minimum distance of 1 meter between each customer and dispensing pharmacist to ensure social distancing.

Hand sanitizing facility should be made available at the entrance to the pharmacy and customers should disinfect hands thoroughly before entering the pharmacy.

Notice should be displayed on the main door stating the opening hours, requirement of a valid prescription or a clinical record with the customer for purchasing prescription medicines.

Only three customers should be allowed to enter into the pharmacy at any given time, the directive cites. A maximum of only one months’ supply of medicines listed in the prescription should be issued.

Pharmacies have been asked to strictly adhere to the restrictions given by Ministry of Health on dispensing Chloroquine, Hydroxychloroquine and Azithromycin.

They have to maintain records of each dispensation of prescription as well as details of the customer in the prescription book.

Pharmacies that have CCTV, should keep their system switched on during the opening hours and records should be preserved for a minimum period of 14 days.

Any suspected case of Covid-19 should be immediately brough to the notice of nearest Ministry of Health office / Police station.
