Opposition erupts over two Private Member’s Bills regarding LGs

A heated argument ensued in Parliament when SLPP MP Jayantha Ketagoda presented two Private Member’s Bills regarding the recall of former members of Local Government institutions, yesterday (5) due to Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and several Opposition MPs protesting against it.

These Bills seek to amend several clauses including in the Municipal Council Amendment Act and the Local Authorities Act. MP Sanjeeva Edirimanna seconded the proposals.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa speaking on the occasion said that the Local Government election should be held. “The election was postponed citing that the government does not have money. Now proposal has been brought to the parliament to recall the members of the dissolved councils,” he said.

He said that this is an attempt to deprive the people of their democratic rights. “We will go before court,” he said.
