Road closures, traffic diversions from February 1 through Galle Road

Police said that several roads around Galle Face will be closed while traffic will be restricted on some other roads on February 1, 2, 3 for the Independence Day (4) from 5 am to 12 noon. 

However, traffic police officers on duty have been instructed to allow students and residents of those roads to travel without obstruction during the relevant hours on the days when this special traffic plan is in effect, Western Province Traffic Division DIG Roshan Wijesinghe said.

Accordingly, on these days, vehicles entering towards Kollupitiya from Bambalapitiya junction on Galle Road, entering towards Kollupitiya from Marine Drive (Colombo Plan Road) Bambalapitiya Railway Station Road junction, entering from Thummulla junction towards R.A.De Mel Mawatha along Baudhaloka Mawatha, entering from Liberty Roundabout towards St. Michael’s Roundabout, entering from Kollupitiya Junction towards Kollupitiya entering towards Kollupitiya Railway Station Road, entering towards Galle Road from St. Michael junction, entering towards Galle Road from Rotunda Roundabout, entering towards N,S.A Roundabout from Ceramic Junction and entering Lanka Bank Mawatha from York Street will be banned.

In addition to this, vehicles entering from Olcott Mawatha, Ceyenor junction towards CTO junction, from CTO Junction towards Lotus Road Ceramic Junction, D.R. Wijewardene Mawatha from Gamini Hall Roundabout, from Kommnaveediya Police Roundabout towards Regal Junction, from Baladaksha Mawatha Junction towards Galle Face and Baldaksha Mawatha, Enter towards Liberty Roundabout will be restricted to vehicular entry towards Galle Face Roundabout.

In addition, the police informs that the traffic entry will be restricted up to S.S.A. Roundabout and Chaitya Road area, York Street to Chatham Street, York Street to Baron Jayathilaka Mawatha, Khan Clock Tower Roundabout to Main Street, YMBA Roundabout.

Buses and light vehicles entering Colombo via Galle Road should divert to Bauddaloka Mawatha, Thummulla Junction, Thurstan Road or Kollupitiya Junction, Liberty Roundabout and Dharmapala Mawatha.

Buses and light vehicles leaving Colombo should take Olcott Mawatha, Technical College Junction, Sangaraja Mawatha, Panchikawatta Road, Maradana Bridge Junction, Gamini Hall Roundabout, T.B. Jayah Mawatha (Darley Road) or Regal Junction, Parsons Road or Chitthampalam Mawatha.

In areas where roads are closed or restricted to traffic, registrants (after verification of identity) will be allowed entry in cases where there are no parades, armoured vehicles or special routes on the route they want to enter.

Traffic officers will guide the public along the nearest and easiest alternative routes so that the public including the drivers who come to travel through the areas where the roads are closed or the traffic is restricted will not be inconvenienced.

Over 1,000 traffic police officers have been deployed to control traffic and for the convenience of commuters.
