Joint operation helps nab two suspects with illegal cigarettes

A coordinated search operation carried out by the Navy and the Office of Excise Department in Galle led to the apprehension of two suspects with 120 packets of illegal foreign cigarettes, over 5kgs of tobacco powder and 2,400 cigarette filters in Ahangama yesterday (18).  

The Sri Lanka Navy, together with other law enforcement agencies conduct regular search operations to curb illegal activities. Based on information received by the Navy, this combined search operation was conducted with the Office of Excise Department at the Ahangama Bus Stand which resulted in the seizing of 120 packets of foreign cigarettes, 05kg and 150g of tobacco powder and 2,400 cigarette filters ready to be sold at two retail shops. Two suspects have also been arrested in connection with the operation.  

The suspects aged 40 and 41 have been identified as residents of Habaraduwa and Ahangama.  

The apprehended suspects along with the tobacco products were handed over to Office of Excise Department in Galle for onward action.
