UDA nets US$ 500,000 by selling Viyathpura houses

Expat workers allowed to buy units in USD

The Urban Development Authority (UDA) has earned more than US$ 500,000 by selling eleven middle-class housing units at the Viyathpura Housing Scheme under the Government’s scheme to sell the UDA-built apartments for foreign currency to Sri Lankan migrant workers.

Even though the UDA had targeted to raise US$ 500,000 from selling houses on dollar terms this year, it has been able to exceed the target even before the end of this year,” Urban Development and Housing Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said.

Steps were taken to sell the middle-class houses built by the UDA on dollar terms to Sri Lankans residing and working abroad as per the instructions of Minister Prasanna Ranatunga. Accordingly, the first related house was sold to a Sri Lanka migrant worker in Dubai last September.

The Minister said that 11 houses were sold from the Viyathpura housing complex located in Pannipitiya and by now, all the two-bedroom houses in the housing complex have been completely sold out.

Sri Lankans living in Dubai, the United States of America, Canada, the United Kingdom, Oman, Qatar, and Fiji islands have bought these houses so far. They were also entitled to a 10 percent discount as the value of the houses was paid at once. In addition, the UDA has received the application forms to buy eight more houses. The UDA has already prepared plans to generate an income of US$1.5 million next year by selling the houses owned by the UDA to Sri Lankans working and residing abroad. Arrangements have also been made to open an INWARD INVESTMENT ACCOUNT which is a special account that will be opened on the recommendations of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka so that foreign citizens can also buy these houses.

Necessary information and relevant application forms in this regard are available on the UDA’s official website (www.uda.gov.lk). More information can also be obtained by calling the UDA at 0777-794016.
