Torrential rains inundate several areas

Two people were killed and over 1500 in the Central Province, especially in the Kandy district were affected as torrential rains swept the area inundating a number of towns and causing earth slips.

According to the Disaster Management Centre, In the Kandy District, 66 houses have been partially damaged.

Authorities said that there was nearly 10 feet of water at some places in Akurana town. A number of vehicles were seeing submerged in flooded waters.

Also several sluice gates in the Polgolla Reservoir have been opened to bring down the flood waters. Meanwhile, several areas in the Kandy town too were inundated including the railway station area.

Many towns including the Kandy city and roads in the district have been flooded.It is reported that many places in Kandy and Akurana are under water due to the heavy rain.

The Kandy Railway Station too was under several feet of water, but this had been cleared in a short while and train services resumed as usual between Kandy and Colombo, a Railways Department official said. Meanwhile, roads have been blocked due to earth slips and the A-9 road in Akurana-Matale has been submerged causing disruption to traffic.

The National Building Research Organization has cautioned that there is a risk of landslides in four districts due to the prevailing heavy rains. Landslide warnings have been issued to some areas in the districts of Kandy, Kurunegala, Matale and Nuwara Eliya.

Several six sluice gates have been opened in Deduru Oya reservoir and several sluice gates have been opened at Parakrama Samudraya reservoir. People in the low lying areas related to these reservoirs have been cautioned to be vigilant about possible flooding.

The NBRO also requests the public in landslide prone areas to be vigilant on possible landslides, slope failures, rock falls, cut slope failure and ground subsidence and to be prepared to evacuate to a safe location if necessary. Meanwhile the Meteorology Department said the depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal has entered through the east coast of Sri Lanka and it is moving across the country.

It is likely to move to the western sea area of Sri Lanka by today (26). Accordingly, showers or thunder showers will occur at times over the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, North-Western and Northern Provinces. Heavy showers above 100 mm can be expected at some places in the above areas.

Several spells of showers will occur elsewhere. Strong gusty winds of about (40-50) kmph can be expected at times over the country.
