Sri Lanka bags four golds at Commonwealth Chess

Sri Lanka won four gold medals at the Commonwealth Chess Championship organized by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka and held from November 14 to 22 at the Citrus Hotel, Waskaduwa, Kalutara.

Accordingly, Oshini Devindya Gunawardena (under 10 girls), Newansa Esandi (under 14 girls), Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage (under 20 men) and Sayuni Gihansa Jayaweera, (Best Female Chess Player) won gold medals while K.G.T.S.D.Kiriella (u 18 first runner up), Rashmika Thenuwara (u 18 second runner up), Desandi Dhigansa Gamage (u 16 Second Runner up), Saravanabaavan Brijeash (u 16 first runner up), Aruthran Arunakirinadan (u 16 second runner up), D.C.B.K.Senevirathna (u 14 first runner up), B.M .Thesandu Aken Basnayake (u 14 second runner up), R.M. Dulithma Hemalni Ratnayake (u 12 girls, second runner up), Pamok Methdinu Samaranayake (u 12 boys second runner up), Oshini Vaneesha Gomes (u 8 girls first runner up) and Hesadi R.B. Sethumsa (u.8 Girls second runner up) won cups and medals for their oustanding performances.

India dominated the event by winning 30 medals, comprising 12 gold, 11 silver and 7 bronze medals while Sri Lanka won 20 medals comprising four gold, six silver and 10 bronze medals. England could win only one gold medal at this event.

Total number of 292 players, both male and female from Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Maldives, Bangladesh, South Africa, England and Russia took part in this Tournament.

Victorious Chess Players were awarded medals, cups, certificates and cash prizes by the Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena at the Temple Trees, with the participation of Luxman Wijesooriya, President of CFSL, Gen .Secretary of Commonwealth Chess Association, Vice President of Asian Chess Federation, along with Sports State Minister and Parliamentarian Yadamini Gunawardena.
