Sadeesha and Peshalitha win schools mini marathons

Sadeesha Anushanka of Moratu MV and Peshalitha Maduwanthi Perera of Panthiya MV Mathugama won boys and girls mini marathon at the All Island School Games held at Gampaha last Saturday.

After laps of two years due to Global pandemic the school athletes were keen to take part this events which organised by the Education Ministry with the support of Nestle Lanka Pvt Ltd the makers of Nestomalt.

Anushanka the the 18 year old athlete coached by Indika Cooray had a superb race at this mini marathon which lasted one hour 15 minutes and 38 seconds. In fact Anushanka who was the last John Tarbet senior schools meet 5000m winner came up with good form to finish this marathon while K.M Shriran of Mulankavil MV Kilinochchi (1.16.31 secs) won the second place and third place was won by Dilhara Lakshan of Miriswatte National school (1.17 .00 seconds).

Meanwhile Peshalitha Maduwanthi Perera from lesser known Panthiya MV Mathugama had a good time of 1.34.52 seconds finished first while Oshadini Nilumika Fonseka of Nimala Mariya BMV Tudella, Ja Ela won the second place with a time of 1.35.08 seconds and third place was won by once again a less known school Senapathiya MV Bibila Monaragala’s Chamila Siriwardena with a time of 1.37.01 seconds.

In fact most of the unknown schools from rural areas with lack of facilities did really well at this events and they have to provide with Infrastructure facilities said former Commonwealth Games silver medal hurdler Sriyani Kulawansa who is a present Education Ministry Sports official.

The students had a big pressure no their sports activities during the global pandemic period and Education Ministry together with Nestomalt have organised this mini marathon and 5 km road race for the students.Nestlé Nestomalt in its journey of powering the progress of aspiring athletes and providing a positive start to their sporting career once again came as the sponsors. The support of Nestle always is a big strength to young athletes said Bandula Egodage the Vice President of Nestle Lanka.

Education ministry Secretary M.N Ranasinghe, Additional Secretary Hemantha Premathilake, Vice Presidents of Nestle Bandula Egodage, Ruwan Welikala and Senior Vice President of Nestle Jagath Wedge were among the guests at the presentation ceremony.
