Uvindu excels as Royal make a bold reply

The left-hander Uvindu Weerasekara played an unbeaten 62 in 95 balls with 9 fours as Royal College, Colombo made a bold reply by making 136/4 as bad weather stopped play on the second day of the 143rd "Battle of the Blues" Big Match against S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia, played at SSC grounds yesterday.

Rain interrupted the morning session at the beginning one hour later at 11 am.

The Thomians continued at 207 for 6 wickets while overnight batsman Charuka Pieris was out LPW to young Sandesh Ramanayake in the second over of the day. The number eight batsman Mahith Perera was the only successful Thomain batter scoring 33 in 83 balls with 2 fours while Mt. Lavinia lads were bowled out for 242 adding 35 runs to the overnight total.

Gishan Balasooriya the Royal skipper was the most successful bowler capturing 3 for 56 while the promising paceman Sandesh Ramanayake the youngest son of the former National fast bowling coach Champaka Ramanayake finished with impressive figures of 2 for 16 in his 12-over spell with five maidens.

Royal openers Sineth Jayawardena and Savindu Seneratharachchci were unable to make a good start putting on only 3 runs in the second over when Seneratharachchi was first to out LBW to Kavindu Dias scoring only one run in 8 balls while Jayawardena the experienced left-hander who is in the Under 19 National squad played with more confidence scoring 32 in 38 balls with 6 fours.

The National under 19 experienced all-rounder Sadeesha Rajapaksa who came in to bat at number three did not last long scoring only 5 runs in 12 balls with a boundary and that prize wicket was taken by Janinidu Abeygunawandhane in the sixth over. Uvindu Weertaswekara and Sineth Jayawardena had the highest partnership of 58 runs for the third wicket while Weerasekara played an anchor role to finish the day with an unbeaten 62 with him Ramiru Perera remain on 9 at the wicket when bad light stopped the play at 4.26 pm. Royal College trail by 106 runs with six wickets in hand and are expected to make a big total today the third and final day on this SSC wicket.
