Staff fail to turn up, trains cancelled

Unions want efficient General Manager

More train operations could be curtailed in coming days as employees attached to the Railway Department have no fuel and transport facilities to report to their working places,” a Sri Lanka Railways  spokesman said. A total of 26 train services including office and intercity trains scheduled to operate was cancelled yesterday. Since there is a serious fuel shortage in the country, the situation could worsen in the coming days, the spokesman said.

He said passengers commuting on trains has increased as a result of limited private bus operations due to the shortage of fuel. With the cancellation of train journeys, passengers faced tremendous inconveniences. Workers in the private sector coming to Colombo faced greater difficulties due to the cancellation of trains. Not only the short distances trains but also long distance trains were cancelled yesterday causing greater difficulty for daily passengers as well as passengers who reserved seats earlier. Meanwhile, the Railways Trade Union Alliance yesterday stressed that a more efficient and talented General Manager should be appointed to the Railway Department to save the Railways and strengthening the service.
