Long jumper Sarangi compete in Austria today

Sri Lankan champion long jumper Sarangi Silva is expected to take part at the Austria Open Athletic championship today (2) at Athletic arena in Vienna, Austria.

This will be a good opportunity for Sarangi. The 25 -year old former athlete of Sri Sumangala Balika Panadura is currently representing Sri Lanka Army. Sarangi’s coach Y.K Kularatne who is accompanying Sarangi in this Austria meet said “more than 40 international athletes with Austria athletes will compete at this meet and it always gives more exposure for Sarangi before the Commonwealth Games.

During this Austria tour Sarangi will compete 68th Orlen Jamesz Kusocinki Memorial meet today (2) and this event known to be an European athletics High Performance conference A category meet and the points are more important for Sarangi at this stage on her way to the World Championships. This meet is organized by Polish Athletic Association while Sarangi is the only Sri Lankan athlete to compete.

Meanwhile on June 5 Sarangi will compete at another meet in Chrozon while the 34th International Athletic Meet in Geneva, Switzerland scheduled to be held on June 11th. Sarangi Silva together with Sri Lankan javelin thrower Sumedha Ranasinghe, 400m champion Kalinga Kumarage and 800m women’s champion Gayanthika Abeyratne will compete at this meet to get more exposure before the Commonwealth Games.

Meanwhile on June 14th four Sri Lankan athletes Sarangi, Gayanthika, Sumedha and Kalinga will compete at the Citrus International meet in Bern, Switzerland . The coach Vimukthi Zoysa also will accompanied the team at the Switzerland meets .

"These meets are very important as athletes gain experience as well as local athletes can collect points to take part their future leading international meets and really appreciate Sri Lanka Athletics and Sport Ministry to organize these tours," said National coach Y.K. Kularatne.
