Over 240 suspects held over May 9 attacks

Two-hundred-and-forty-three suspects who are alleged to have burnt the houses and offices of Parliamentarians of the former ruling party (SLPP) in the Kurunegala District have been arrested by the police so far. Former Ministers Johnston Fernando, Shantha Bandara and D.B. Herath, MP Gunapala Rathnasekara and Kurunegala Mayor Thushara Sanjeewa Vitharanage are among the politicians who were affected.

Police sources are of the opinion that the estimated damage caused to their houses and properties stands at Rs. 845 million. Police are still seeking for more suspects who are responsible for these crimes.

The majority of the suspects were found to be members of a misguided youth group motivated by certain Opposition political parties that presently represent Parliament, a senior police officer in Kurunegala said yesterday.
