Guard your tongue, Speaker tells MPs

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena requested all Parliamentarians yesterday to be careful when mentioning the names of government officials who don’t have the ability to attend Parliament.

He said that the MPs have the opportunity to express their views during Parliamentary debates; these government officials do not get the opportunity to defend themselves when allegations are made against them.

The Speaker also said that government officials have expressed their displeasure over the speeches being made by some MPs.

He said this at the commencement of Parliament sessions yesterday. A decision was taken on Thursday to continue the debate on the recent violence in the country for a fourth day yesterday, postponing the scheduled condolence motion on the recently slain MP Amarakeerthi Athukorale.

Security was tightened around parliament yesterday as well and the riot police were seen on standby.
