Sri Lanka beat Uzbekistan to qualify for Asian Games

Sri Lanka men’s hockey team defeated Uzbekistan to finish in fifth place at the Asian Games qualifying Hockey tournament match and has qualified for the Asian Games. This is a good achievement by Sri Lankan players after been disqualified from the semi finals at this qualifying tournament which ended in Bangkok Thailand yesterday.

The deciding game between Uzbekistan and Sri Lanka turned out to be a keen tussle while both sides ended with three all after four quarters. However Sri Lanka won the game 3/1 with a penalty shoot to finish 5th place to qualify for next Asian Games in China.

At the league stage Sri Lanka defeated Singapore 5/2 in their opening game while Sri Lankans lost to Bangladesh 2/5 and lost to Indonesia 1/3 and were unable to qualify for the semi finals.

After losing against Bangladesh and Indonesia at the league round Sri Lanka had to play against Hong Kong and Uzbekistan. However Sri Lankans fought back to beat Hong Kong 5/2 and defected Uzbekistan 3/1 in a penalty shoot out.

There were nine teams participated for the Asian Games Qualification tournament.

Sri Lanka was in group B with Bangladesh, Indonesia and Singapore while Oman, Thailand, Hong Kong, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan were competed in the Group A.

Oman, Bangladesh, Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Uzbekistan have qualified from this tournament.

Infact Sri Lanka qualified to play last Asian Games in Jakarta in 2018 and finished ninth place out of 12 countries while Sri Lankans were able to beat more fancied Thailand and Hong Kong. This is the highest achievement by Sri Lankan team at this Asian Games history.
