MPs should work to revive economy - IRES Executive Director

The Executive Director of the Institute of Democratic Reforms and Electoral Studies (IRES) Manjula Gajanayaka called upon all Members of Parliament to set aside petty differences and actively contribute towards reviving the nation’s economy.

He added that reviving the economy should take precedence above every other demand and commended Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe for taking up the challenge and hoped that the likes of Harsha de Silva, Eran Wickremerathne, Anura Kumara Dissanayaka, M. A. Sumanthiran, Mano Ganeshan, Wijeyadasa Rajapaksha, Dullas Alahapperuma, M. U. M. Ali Sabry, PC and Kanchana Wijesekera would take up portfolios in the new Cabinet.

He said that the main demand of the protesters at Galle Face should be addressed and suggested that steps should be taken to abolish the Executive Presidency and introduce the 21st Amendment to the Constitution.

Gajanayaka said that it was the national responsibility of the present law-makers to impart their expertise at this time of need and the responsibility of the voter to elect Statesmen and women to Parliament in the future.

In addition to the above objectives Gajanayaka said that it was imperative that action be initiated to recover the money which has been plundered from the nation through various means and bring those responsible before Court.

This was another reason that present members of the Opposition should take up key portfolios in the new Cabinet or like in 2015 the miscreants would go scot free.
