Joes, De Mazenod, Richmond and Mahanama battle in semi-finals

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The unbeaten St. Joseph's cricket team will meet De Mazenod Kandana on April 5 while Richmond will take on unbeaten Mahanama on April 7 in their Under 19 Division One Tier ‘A’ Limited Overs semi-finals and both games are scheduled to be played at Surrey Grounds Maggona.

Josephians led by Shevon Daniel had an easy six-wicket win over Wesley in the quarter-finals while Daniel and experienced leg spinner Dunith Wellalage took 4 wickets each to strangle Wesley for 167 all out in 47 overs.

Daniel was the match hero with a sparkling knock of unbeaten 85 in 75 balls striking 6 fours and five sixes. The experienced National Under 19 duo Daniel and Wellalage are a big threat to De Mazenod. However, De Mazenod Skipper Ruveen Fonseka scored a fine knock of 51 and Mithul Senerath with an unbeaten 41 while leg spinner Shenash Fernando had impressive figures of 4 for 22 guided to make an upset victory over favorites Nalanda College in their quarter-finals and that also gave much-needed confidence for Mazedonians.

Meanwhile, Mahanama College led by Devindu Kekirideniya notched up a six-wicket win over St. Benedict's Kotahena in their quarter-final expected to make a good challenge against Richmond in this semi-final. Koojana Perera, the Mahanama all-rounder was the quarter-final match-winner with impressive figures of 5 for 18 in his ten-over spell while scoring a superb knock of unbeaten 47 with five fours to seal their victory in 24th over in their low scoring game.

Richmond led by Bhanuka Manohara defeated St. Anthony's Katugastota by 37 runs on a D/L method at Surrey grounds once again opportunity to play at the same venue in this semi-final against Mahanama. Richmond opener Vishara Fernando (58) and 15-year old Thamindu Pradeeptha (52) who hit half-centuries are in good form while 16-year-old ff spinner Sharon Abhishek who took 4 for 23 at the quarter-final game is their leading off-spinner. Malsha Thrupathi is also an off-spinner who represented the National Under 19 side with paceman Hansamana de Silva is strengthing the Richmond bowling department.

Meanwhile, Thurstan College will meet Maris Stella Negombo in their division one Tier B semi-final on April 6th at Surrey grounds while the winners of St Peters and Mahinda quarter-final game will meet Isipatana in their Tier B second semi-final which is scheduled to be played on April 4 at Surrey grounds.
