General Ratnayake shares memories of Military Service in CMA Annual Report

Prof. Lakshman R Watawala President CMA Sri Lanka presents the CMA Sri Lanka Annual Report and Certified Management Accountant Journal to General Daya Ratnayake, former Commander of the Sri Lanka Army and currently Secretary to the Ministry of Industries and prior to that Chairman of Sri Lanka Ports Authority.

Gen. Ratnayake’s interview was published in the CMA Certified Management Accountant Journal 2021 where he shared his experiences in the Military Service, Sri Lanka Ports Authority and with the current Ministry of Industries.

The interview paid special attention to his leadership qualities and experiences being the 20th Commander of the Sri Lanka Army and thereafter holding several senior positions such as Commanding Officer of Sri Lanka Military Academy, Director Media and Military Spokesman for the Ministry of Defence while holding the position of Commissioner General of General Rehabilitation.

Furthermore, he highlighted his contribution made to the commercial sector while serving as the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority.

Prof. Watawala going through the CMA Annual Report COVID-19 and Digitization explained the setting up of the CMA Sri Lanka SME Development Committee in April 2020 to provide solutions to the SME sector affected by the Covid-19 Pandemic. This committee comprised professional bodies, Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Commercial Banks and industry experts.

The inaugural SME Development Conference was held in Hambantota with the Prime Minister as the Chief Guest and the Minister of Industries as Guest of Honour accompanied with many other Ministers and State Ministers and distinguished guests.

This event was supported by the Hambantota District Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by nine Commercial Banks in the Hambantota District and had 350 SME customers participated. He also informed that the proposal made by the Committee for the formation of a SME Credit Guarantee Institution to the Minister of Industries was submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers and the approval given to go ahead with the project for the Ministry of Finance to implement it with the assistance of the Asian Development Bank.

This is indeed a great achievement for the SME sector and will assist Entrepreneurs, start up business and existing businesses to have an institution which will assist in the funding which have been a success in many countries and contributed to economic development.

The Secretary Ministry of Industries Gen Daya Ratnayake also discussed about how CMA and Ministry can work together and support SMEs which are making a major contribution to the economy and employment of the country.
