Dengue prevention assistants to be deployed for other functions - Minister

Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella yesterday said that a group of dengue prevention assistants have not met the relevant educational qualifications for them to be made permanent.

He said that the dengue prevention assistants have been recruited on a contract basis in 2017 and 847 of them have not met the relevant qualification criteria.

A health assistant should have six passes with minimum two credits at the Ordinary Level examination to be recruited to the health service as a health assistant.

Ministry sources said that a Cabinet paper is to be presented seeking the government permission to deploy them for other functions.

These dengue prevention assistants entered the Ministry premises on Wednesday and refused to leave the premises until their demands were met by the government.The Dengue Prevention Assistants Association Secretary T. A. Suranga said the government is eyeing to deploy these 847 employees for other functions.“We were working for over five years for a meagre salary of Rs.20,000. Now they are trying to deploy them for other functions as well,” he said.
