Tibhar All Island Open Ranking TT Championship

Chameera Ginige of University of Moratuwa and Bimandee Bandara of Hillwood College Kandy emerged men’s and women’s open champions at the 16th Tibhar All Island Open Ranking Table Tennis Championship which concluded at Indoor Stadium Bandaragama over the weekend.

At the men’s open singles Chameera the National rank three player created a major upset to win by defeating National rank two player Krishan Wickramaratne of Vidyartha OBA. Earlier at the semi-final Chameera beat National champion number one player Senura Silva to enter the final. However Senura had to be satisfied with winning two titles boys under 17 and under 19 titles. The 16 year-old-Aanandian Senura beat Venuka Gunawardena of Royal College at the boys under 17 final while at the under 19 final once again Senura was able to beat Chanul Dulsena of Dharmasoka, Ambalangoda.

Meanwhile Chameera Ginige partnered with Senura Silva won the men’s double title defeating Ranchagoda brothers Nimesh and Thisas. However Chameera couldn’t complete his triple crown in this tournament while partnered with Ishara Madurangi lost to Hansani Piyumila and Nimesh Ranchagoda at the mixed doubles final.

Meanwhile at the women’s open singles Bimandee Bandara also made an upset victory over Muthumali Priyadharshani of Navy the current National champion to win the women’s singles title. The experienced Ishara Madurangi who also the former National champion lost her quarter final game against Muthumali earlier in this tournament. Madurangi who had a leg injury was not at her best and managed to enter up to quarter finals. The 16-year-old Bimandee really performed well during this tournament, winning two more titles girls under 17 and under 19. Bimandee beat Nadithi Rehansa of Prajapathi BMV Ambalangoida at the under 17 final while she outclassed Maneesha Salindi of Dharmasoka, Ambalangoda at the girls under 19 final to complete the third title victory.

The under 11 boy’s singles title was won by Agasthiya Anandith of Vidyartha College Kandy defeating Naviru Nethsitha of Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda. The girls under 11 final was won by Anudhi Ariyaratne of St Joseph’s BMV Kegalle defeating Yoshini Jayawardena of St Anthony’s Kandy. Agasthiya and Anudhi were adjudged the Most Promising Players of the tournament. The 12-year-old Dewmeth Weerasena of Lyceum International Nugegoda also won two titles boys under 13 and 15. He defeated Hareen Nimdinu of Dharmasoka at the under 13 final and beat Thisum Gamage of Ananda at the boys under 15 final. Thamadhi Kavindya of Devananada College, Ambalangoda won the girls under 13 final defeating Sandinthie Jayasinghe of Musaeus College. The girls under 15 final was won by Chamisha Tushadi of Kegalu BMV who defeated Oneli Lihanasa of Musaeus College.

Most of the ranking players took part at this tournament which was conducted by Tibhar Sports Club.
