Electricity Board yet to settle debts of Alternative Energy Producers

Sri Lanka Electricity Board owes over Rs. 26 billion to Alternative Energy Producers in power generation charges that has to be paid for generating and providing electricity for the national grid for Solar, biomass Wind and Hydro power generators in the private sector.

“Usually such amounts are settled in less than three months. However, now it is almost six months and this Rs. 26 billion is yet to be settled,” said the Group of Alternative Energy producers in Colombo on Tuesday.

They also said that it’s the alternative power that helped to run the country without power cuts during day time and said an early settlement in this regard would be helpful to the industry.

“With the price of Oil, Coal and Gas increasing globally, it is not sustainable for countries such as Sri Lanka which has to import fossil fuels to have larger exposure to non-renewable sources of energy. It is best to make the switch to renewable forms of energy sooner rather than later, so that the country’s economy is not harmed. Another issue that has hampered the success of the renewable energy sector is the importation restrictions imposed on the sector, which has made it difficult to obtain the machinery necessary and we hope this area too would be successfully addressed by the government soon.”
