CH and FC clinched the Commander’s Cup when they defeated Air Force SC 29-11 in the second leg rugby encounter at Ratmalana yesterday.
CH collected their points from five tries and two conversions while the Airmen responded with a solitary try, one penalty and one drop goal after having led 24-11 at half time.
CH produced a superb brand of running rugby combining effectively with their forwards along with the three quarters and gave a torrid time to their opponents, who were completely outplayed.
For CH, the tries were scored by scrum half Avishka Lee (two), Skipper cum wing forward Sudarshana Muthuthanthri (one), hooker Prasath Madushanka (one) and number eight Omalka Gunarathne (one), while centre Thenuka Nanayakkara put over the two conversions.
Meanwhile, winger Rumesh Ramdas scored the solitary try while fly half Charith Senevirathne slotted in the penalty and the drop goal for Air Force SC. “I like to congratulate both the teams, irrespective of the result today, because at the end of the day, both teams will be winners as they had the courage and commitment to take up this challenge in such hard times by sacrificing their jobs, families and time, to be in a bubble for over a month in order to complete this encounter,” CH and FC Head Coach Rohitha Rajapaksa said after the game.
“Huge shout out to the administration of both the Air Force and CH and FC teams for taking care of the boys and also the Sports Minister along with the health authorities who ensure our daily antigen tests and weekly PCRs are done to safeguard the players and the support staff.”
“It’s a victory for the entire rugby community in the country and it just goes to show that rugby could be back if a little bit of time and effort is put into the sport we love so much.” Rajapaksa added.
