TOKYO, July 30 – South Asia’s fastest man Yupun Abeykoon is determined to improve on his record further when he runs in the Men’s 100m first-round heats of the 2020 Olympic Games here tomorrow.
There are seven Men’s 100m first-round heats to be worked off from 7.45 p.m. Japan ST (4.15 p.m. Sri Lanka time) on Saturday.
But before that, there are three Men’s 100m qualifying events on the same day commencing from 11.35 a.m. Japan ST (8.05 a.m. SL time).
There are 27 sprinters taking part in the morning qualifiers, out of which 10 will get passage for the seven first-round heats.
Since Sri Lankan Abeykoon has got his Olympic passage through his World Rankings and not on entry timing, he will run directly from the first-round under lights.
Abeykoon did a career best 10.15s in Savona, Italy, in May, this year. He won another international meet in Germany in the same month in 10.09s, but that was not counted as a record due to the excessive wind support.
“I am delighted with the golden opportunity to sprint in the Olympics. I will make every effort to get the maximum out of this,” Abeykoon said.
