New laboratories soon to test purity of organic fertiliser imports

The government plans to set up laboratories to test future organic fertiliser imports, Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said. He was speaking at a recent media briefing held at the ministry.

The minister said that the government would pay special attention to prevent the supply of fertiliser containing harmful materials. He added that, as the methods of testing organic fertiliser are different from those used to test chemical fertiliser, new laboratories suited for testing the purity of organic fertiliser imports would be set up soon.

Minister Amaraweera said that, while the country has laboratories to test chemical fertiliser, there are none to test organic fertiliser.

He added that fertiliser that fail the tests at the upcoming laboratories would not be supplied to farmers.
