The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the proposal made by Education Minister Prof G.L. Peiris to establish Town Colleges or University Colleges as higher education institutes that award degrees.
This will help create suitable job opportunities by enhancing the required skills in the production sectors in the relevant districts and for formulating legal provisions required for this purpose, Co-Cabinet Spokesman Plantation Minister Dr.Ramesh Pathirana said.
Speaking at the weekly Cabinet media briefing held yesterday at the Government Information Department, Minister Pathirana said that only 20 percent of students qualified for university entrance and students who are unable to enter universities do not sufficiently turn towards industrial and vocational training. The government has already identified the importance of moulding competitive level professionals with higher academic recognition and competency for enhancing the quality of the professions that has a growing demand in the employment arena has been recognised as a contemporary requirement.
