Dazzling Dilshi steals the limelight at Athletic Trials

South Asian Games triple Gold Medallist and the defending national champion Dilshi Kumarasinghe stole the limelight on the final day of the National Athletic Trials, which concluded at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo yesterday.

The 21-year-old promising athlete from Digana representing Sri Lanka Army set up a new Sri Lanka record in the Women’s 800m event clocking 2.02.52s.

She shattered the previous record of 2.02.55s set by Gayanthika Abeyratne at the 2017 National Athletic Trials.

Nimali Liyanarachchi had to be satisfied with second place with a time of 2.03.15s while Abeyratne was placed third with a time of 2.03.64s.

Meanwhile, A. S. M. Safan from Army won the Men’s 200m final while overcoming the defending national champion Kalinga Kumarage.

Safan finished the race with a time of 20.81s while Kumarage was placed second with a time of 20.85s and Aruna Dharshana was placed third with a time of 21.00s. The 200m Women’s final was won by the national champion Nadeesha Ramanayake of Army with a time of 24.28s.

The Men’s pole vault event was won by S. Puvitharan of Army with a leap of 4.90m while K. A. T. Lakshani of Air Force won the Women’s triple jump with an effort of 12.73m.

Lakshika Sugandi of Army won the 100m hurdles with a timing of 13.95s while the Men’s 800m event was won by Soldier G. R Chathruranga with a time of 1.49.82s.

Meanwhile, Asanka Rathnasena of Air Force won the Men’s 400m with a time of 51.88s while his younger brother Asitha from Army won the second place with a time of 52.13s.

T. G. V. Sandaruwan of Sri Lanka Schools won the Men’s triple jump with a distance of 16.08m.

Sanjaya Bandara of Army won the Men’s hammer throw with an effort of 48.29m while the Women’s hammer throw was won by W. A. S. M. Amarasinghe of Army with a distance of 40.51m.
