Four deportees arrested for propogating extremist ideologies

The Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) has arrested four people, including the person who allegedly posted a video of a group of people making a pledge with Saharan Hashim on the internet hours after the Easter attack. The Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) arrested two suspects on March 31 and one of them had released the video and the photo on the internet, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.

They have been arrested in Colombo. One of the arrested suspects is a 31 year old resident of Wellampitiya while the other is a 32 year old resident of Thihariya.

Investigations have revealed that they have created a WhatsApp group called ‘One Umma’ and propagated extremist ideologies in various ways from Qatar. These people had left Sri Lanka and worked in Qatar. They were later deported from Qatar to Sri Lanka on November 21, according to a notice issued by the Sri Lanka Police. Two more persons were arrested by the Terrorism Investigation Unit on Monday (31) on charges of facilitating the conduct of extremist classes in the Muttur area in late 2018.

The police spokesman said all four suspects were being held under the Prevention of Terrorism Act and are being questioned.
