Measures to reduce traffic in major cities - Minister

The construction of roundabouts and the installation of light signal systems will be completed within six months to reduce traffic congestion in major cities.

Highways Minister Johnston Fernando yesterday said that Dr. Dimantha de Silva of the Moratuwa University is preparing a study report with a leading team of experts to reduce traffic congestion.

This study report focuses on traffic congestion and how to deal with it.

The Minister said the project will be implemented in almost all major cities including Colombo, Kandy, Kurunegala, Galle, Matara, Anuradhapura, Puttalam, Trincomalee, Ratnapura, Kegalle and Nuwara Eliya.

“Our hope is to increase transport facilities of the people. We hope to create an era in which the farming community will be able to market their produce quickly so that they can get to the hospital, to the workplace and to do their work quickly. So have no doubt. We are developing not only the main roads but also the rural roads.

“We will not sell the Port. That’s a blatant lie.The gang representing the Opposition Leader Premadasa messed up the port after signing agreements. Their Good Governance had destroyed the country in the past five years. As a government we are untying the knot that they tied. The President has decided what is best for the people of the country. Every project is implemented in the best way possible for the people and the country as best as possible. That is the reality. Conducting protests is a feature of a democracy. Protests were also held during my tenure as Ports Minister. That is nothing new. However, when the Hambantota port was sold by Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe and Mr. Premadasa’s gang, Trade Unions were silent. If such a battle had been waged then such a situation would not have arisen in this country today with the Hambantota port being sold. It would be good if port shares were invested in our country’s stock market. There is nothing wrong with that. That’s a very good thing. The President has promised not to sell this port.

Fernando expressed these views to the media after a meeting of the Kurunegala District Rural Infrastructure Development Committee held at the Kurunegala District Secretariat Auditorium on Wednesday. Power and Energy Minister Dullas Alahapperuma, State Ministers and government officials were present.
