Errant motor bikers held in night raid

Twenty three young riders who rode high powered racing motorcycles with engines beyond the legal capacity with altered chassis numbers were arrested by the Mirihana Police on Sunday (6).

The Mirihana Traffic Police said the suspects had been recklessly riding on roads surrounding Parliament and Madiwela causing inconvenience to the public.Motorcycles had been causing disturbance in the area.

Police said the group was conducting races after 10 pm by inviting youth residing in various parts of the country using Facebook. Police stated that 23 motor bikes were taken into Police custody.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the motorcycles seized had motorcycles with an engine capacity ranging from 250cc to 1000cc and that the motorcycles which could not be registered in the country were registered through various fraudulent means. Investigations have revealed that one of the arrested motorcyclists had been driving using a number plate of a scooter type motorcycle. The motorcycles will be handed over to the Colombo Crimes Division to investigate whether any crime was committed using those motorcycles, police said.

Police said that a large number of the motorcycles seized were made in Japan and that the arrested youths were aged between 19 and 27 and would be produced in court after receiving the investigation reports.
