Academic activities of government schools except those in the Western Province (WP) and isolated areas will commence on Monday (23) for students of Grade 6 to 13.
Education Minister Prof. G. L.Peiris said this decision was taken on the recommendation of health authorities.The third term of government schools scheduled to commence on November 9 had been extended by two weeks due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation in the country.
Speaking at a press conference at the Education Ministry premises yesterday, Prof. G.L.Peiris added that the Ministry arrived at this decision after analysing all aspects of the situation.
The Education Minister said students living in the Western Province and isolated areas will not be permitted to attend schools in other areas.
He said that decision with regard to the opening of schools is taken after considering their health and the future of the schoolchildren. “No decision has been taken with regard to the opening of schools in the Western Province so far,” he said.
He added that schools will not be open for the students of Grade 1 to 5 due to practical issues in relation to ensuring health and safety of students.The Minister added that the respective principals are responsible for creating an environment to conduct schools in compliance with health guidelines issued to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
He said that a committee formed by the principal of the respective school will take decisions on how academic activities should be conducted at the respective schools in compliance with health guidelines.
This committee comprises area Public Health Inspector, the Grama Niladhari, a representative of School Development Committee and member of Past Pupils Association.
The Minister was of the view that this committee will be more effective in taking decisions on the ground. He said that the Ministry will discuss the possibility of opening schools for grade 11 students in the Western Province and the isolated areas.
