Ramanna Chapter urges EC to cancel AJP National List seat

The Executive Committee of Ramanna Maha Nikaya has reportedly requested Election Commission to cancel the National List Parliament seat obtained by the Ape Janabala Pakshaya (AJP) at the recently concluded General Election.

Ramanna Maha Nikaya Chief Sangha Nayaka and its Executive Committee media spokesman Ven. Dr. Omalpe Sobhitha Thera yesterday told the Daily News that they have requested this action from Election Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya after observing the un-Buddhist and uncivilized actions of the leaders of that political party, which had already left a black mark on the Buddhist community and the nation as a whole.

“The three Buddhist monks who led the party, and the office bearers who had steered it, have displayed unacceptable characteristics. They have acted in explicit violation of contextual code of ethics not to mention those monastic codes of ethics,” he said.

Former Parliamentarian Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thera and Bodu Bala Sena Movement Secretary Ven Galagoda Aththe Gnansara jointly led the Ape Janabala Pakshaya. Ven.Vedinigama Wimalatissa Thera was its General Secretary. They contested the election under the flag symbol.

“The clashes between the members of the Ape Janabala Pakshaya to choose from among them who will be appointed to the National List slot, have disheartened and shocked the Sri Lankan public,” he said.

Asked what if they were going to solve their problems and choose someone to sit on the National List MP chair of the Parliament, Ven. Dr. Sobhitha Thera said, “If so, there will be a question in everyone’s minds as to whether they deserved that seat for what they said they would stand for in the election, because they themselves have broken the very foundation that is needed to promote their policies.”
