NPP dissatisfied with General Election results: Anura Kumara

The National People's Power (NPP) is dissatisfied with the votes it has polled at the General Election, NPP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said. He was addressing a media briefing held at the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Head Office, yesterday.

“Nearly nine months have passed since the new government came to power and the main argument put forward by it was that it would not be able to solve problems such as pension cuts and the fertiliser shortage for nearly nine months,” Dissanayake said.

The NPP Leader also pointed out that the people have given power to the statement made by the government that a 2/3rd majority was required to implement the promises given during the last Presidential Election. Therefore, there are no excuses for the President and the Prime Minister claiming that they are unable to fulfil the promises, he added.

Anura Kumara Dissanayake further stated that the government has come up with an idea for a new Constitution, but nowhere does it say anything about its contents.

“We also believe that the 1978 Constitution is an outdated one. With the introduction of 19th Amendment to it, apart from the two amendments put forward for democracy, the desire for power that existed at that time was included in them. Therefore, we are ready to consider a Constitution that will strengthen democracy, human rights, and the freedom of citizens,” he said.

“In addition to that, the COVID-19 pandemic situation created a number of special problems within the country. It has been stated at the Presidential and General Elections that instead of imposing economic downturns on the people, such as job losses, overtime cuts in the public service, and the problem of creating new jobs, they will move towards providing relief. We hope these promises will be fulfilled,” Dissanayake added.
