Dian Gomes to remain as Boxing Association President

Sri Lanka Boxing Association nominations closed on 18th July with only one faction having submitted their nominations to the election which will be held on 20th August at the Sports Ministry .

The incumbent President Dian Gomes will be elected to the top post once again for the next four years. This will be the third time Gomes is getting this responsibility to promote boxing in Sri Lanka . Last time In 2017 Gomes was elected for the President post He was elected to this top post for the first time in 2004 to 2007 and a second time in 2017 up to date . .

Gomes vision is very clear which paved the way for more school level boxers to reach the National level and giving more exposure at International level. He always worked hard to promote the players to uplift the sport. Dian Gomes is also recognised in the International boxing arena and already hold s the post of committee member at the Asian Boxing Association as well as member of the women’s committee of the International Boxing Association .

Former National boxing coach Wasantha Kumara and former South Asian Games silver medalist and former National champion DIG Saman Gunaratne will be elected as Vice Presidents from the Gomes faction and this is a good move.

Meanwhile Lt Colonel (Rtd) Hemantha Weerasinghe is going to to be elected as new Secretary of the Boxing Association. Weerasinghe who was the former National boxing champion presently works as an International Technical officer as well as Secretary of the Asian Boxing Judges Association.

This will be the second time Weerasinghe is going to be elected for the Boxing Association Secretary post as he was holding this same position from 2008 to 2010.

M.D.M Pieris who was the former Stubbs Shield boxing champion is going to be elected as the Treasurer In addition to Executive committee members, Assistant Secretary and Assistant Treasurer posts also will be filled at the election on 20th August
