Education Ministry bans contact sports

The Ministry of Education has banned contact sports and training for such events in schools until further notice. The Secretary to the State Ministry of Education, Ranjith Chandrasekera said the decision was taken due to the risks concerning the spread of the novel coronavirus.

He said non-contact sports and training can commence in schools. Especially Education Ministry gave instructions to all school authorities to focus on education more than sports during this period.

The National schools athletic meet has already been cancelled this year due to present situation while most of the National schools sports activities have been postponed.

Meanwhile Education Ministry together with Sports Ministry have decided to do away with any kind of competition for the under 13 age group.

The gazette notification to re impose the 2013 policy decision of withholding competition for under 13 will be issued in two weeks time.

However this is not a new rule. The original gazette had been issued in 2013. But still in competitions were organised for those beginner age group in some sports. However the Education Ministry as the authority will not conduct or encourage competitions.

There can be fun events or events of any other nature picking up first, second or third or choosing a champion.

There could be prizes and certificates given to participants mentioning the kids achievements of the particular event they could take part in.

The SportS Ministry Secretary K.D.S Ruwanchandra also said they are not going to endorse any under 13 competitions here after. It is something that is already banned. The affiliated federations of the Ministry of Sports can’t do it now.

There could be leeway for some specific sports like mind games, etc. Basically competitions can’t be held in physical contact sports for under 13 till things become active after the Coronavirus pandemic Actually there was a Sports Ministry circular issued previously. But the problem was it was not put into action till today said the Sports Ministry Secretary.
