Demolished building not the king’s court - Prelate

There is no historical evidence to prove that the demolished building in the heart of Kurunegala town was the royal court of the King Buwanekabahu II, North Western Province Chief Adhikarana Sangha Nayake Ven. Rekawa Jinarathna Nayaka Thera said yesterday.

The Thera asserted that the Kurunegala kingdom had been ruled by several kings including Buwanekabahu II, Buwanekabahu IV and King Vijayabahu II. The ruins from those days are very rare,” he said.

The Thera said that this incident is being used by Opposition politicians to sling mud at the Prime Minister since he was contesting the upcoming General election from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna from the Kurunegala district. “Since PM Mahinda Rajapaksa is the Cultural Affairs Minister, his political opponents are now capitalising from this incident to gain political mileage,”he said.

The Thera said the building in question was constructed by British rulers and authorities should take legal action against those who demolished this building. This building presumed to be the King’s court of King Buwanekabahu II had been demolished on July 16 for a road development project.
