Fourteen year old Nalandian Susal wins Sri Lanka Chess Grand Prix

14 year old Fide Master (FM) L.M. Susal Thewjan De Silva of Nalanda College Colombo emerged champion at the 7th Sri Lanka Grand Prix 2020 which was played at the Chess Federation headquarters on Sunday

The most promising chess player in the country Susal Thewjan De Silva earned only 9 points in 11 rounds. Susal Thewjan De Silva beat Thisal Manjith Piyumantha, CM Kevin Ranindu Silva, IM Romesh Weerawardane, Jenith Weeratunge, Elath Mathanga De Silva, Dimuthu Abewardane, A.A.C.B.

Amarasinghe and last year champion CM Chandana Wijekoon in eight rounds. He lost only game against Minul Sanjula Doluweera in the 7th round. He drew with Chinthaka Anuruddha (in the 5th round) and E.D.S. Chandula (in the 11th round) in the event.

Runner up Gallappatthi Chinthaka Anuruddha (Kandy YMCA) earned only 8.5 points in 11 rounds. Chinthaka Anuruddha beat Jenith Weeratunge, Dimuthu Abeywardane, Elath Mathanga De Silva, A.A.C.B. Amarasinghe, CM Chandana Wijekoon and E.D.S. Chandula in six rounds. He drew with IM Romesh

Weerawardane, FM Minul Doluweera, FM Susal Thewjan De Silva, Thisal Piyumantha and CM Kevin Ranindu Silva in other five rounds. CM Kevin Ranindu Silva of St. Benedict’s College Kotahena was third placed in the event.

The event which is conducted by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka is the first Sporting Event in Sri Lanka after the Covid - 19 pandemic.

The event was participated by leading 12 Chess players in the country.

The Chess Federation distributed Rs. 50,000 for the Champion with a total of Rs. 115,000 prize money with trophies and Medals. (Y.K.)
