Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka (TTASL) is expected to send their leading Table Tennis players for training to foreign countries like China and South Korea . They need that type of training to get more exposure said senior officials of the TTASL. We have to focus on International tournaments and their standard is very high . Especially all leading world ranking players are in the Asian region. Countries like China, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia always are in front due to their experience .

The newly appointed TT officials headed by former State Minister Kanaka Herath and it's Secretary Chandana Srinath were expected to launch a new development programme but due to the present situation they could not go ahead

Sri Lanka have managed to win a gold medal in table tennis at the South Asian Games (SAG), “our target is to win a gold medal in the women’s doubles event at the next SAG” However, it will be a tough task to win a gold medal competing against India.

At the last SAG in Kathmandu, Sri Lanka were able to win one silver and six bronze medals . However we wanted to add gold medals from South Asian level and now the time has come to focus on this said a senior official of the TTASL.

However due to covid -19 epidemic paddlers couldn’t take part in several International tournaments .Sri Lanka were scheduled to participate in four international table tennis competitions in 2020 with the World Table Tennis Championship which was scheduled to be held in Busan, South Korea from March 22 to 29 being the premier event, said a senior official of the TTASL.

The participation for the World Championship which attracts 72 countries is based on world rankings and significantly the Sri Lanka women’s table tennis team have gained qualification. The Sri Lanka men’s table tennis team have not gained direct qualification but have secured entry because of the non-participation of some teams.

The Asian Olympic qualifying tournament (Thailand), South Asian Junior Championship (Bangladesh) and South Asian Senior Championship (Pakistan) are the other major international tournaments scheduled to be held this year. When it is announced that these tournaments are going to be held, Sri Lanka will definitely participate by conducting selection trials for each event, according to the senior TTASL official.

TTAL is unable to conduct any tournaments in the country as scheduled this year, due to covid -19 epidemic , among them are four ranking tournaments and the Nationals, according to the TTASL official .

However thay are planning to hold ranking tournaments and dates are not finalised yet .We have to adjust the dates as G.C.E.A/L and O/L exams dates are not yet finalised
