Contraband and drugs have been found inside prisons in special search operations carried out inside prisons islandwide during the last four weeks.
Prison officials had seized drugs and mobile phones and other equipment which were hidden inside lock ups. Officials had seized Heroin (116g), mobile phones (1102), SIM cards (688), mobile phone batteries (1310), phone chargers (283) and hands free (77) from the prisons and most of them were found from the Colombo and Negombo Prisons, the source said.
Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya told the Daily News that these special search operations were carried out on the direction of President Gotabaya Rajapakse who had called for rectifications in the department.
He said search operations are continuing further and that special search operations were carried out to ensure the prevention of illegal activities inside the prisons.
