President pledges renewed drive to develop agriculture

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa launched the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna’s (SLPP’s) 2020 General Election campaign from Anuradhapura yesterday with a pledge to develop the agricultural sector by rectifying shortcomings such as the lack of fertilizer and irrigated water.

The President, engaged in an election campaign tour from Thalawa, Eriyagama, promised to the villagers who met him that solutions would be found to the fertilizer shortage and a better market ensured for agricultural produce. He was accompanied by District SLPP contestants headed by Minister S.M. Chandrasena.

During his visit the President inspected the Thammannawa Tank and exchanged views with the people who had gathered to meet him. The Traders Community of the Thambuttegama Economic Trade Centre donated a sum of Rs.200,000 to the President to be credited to the Covid-19 Fund.

President Rajapaksa also met the public at the Kalawewa Tank bed, Kekirawa “Kumbuk Sisila” Park at the Galkulama Junction, Horowpathana Weekend Fair site, Kebithigollewa Urban Park, Medawachchiya Senanayake Park, Tholuwila Archaeological site and the Anuradhapura Kada Panaha Premises, where he received a rousing welcome.

The President enthusiastically engaged in conversation with the public without addressing them from any platform using public address systems.

S.M. Chandrasena, Duminda Dissanayake, Buddhika Premaratne, Channa Jayasumana, S.C. Muthukumarana, Weerasena Gamage, Shehan Semasinghe and T.M.R. Siripala accompanied the President on his tour.
