The Government does not accept the Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) signed by India, Japan and Sri Lanka on the Eastern Container Terminal of the Colombo Port as that agreement does not seem to have any effective outcome on the Colombo Port, Sri Lanka Nidahas Podujana Peramuna Colombo District Candidate, Minister Wimal Weerawansa said.

He stated this to the media after visiting the Mahanayaka Theras in Kandy along with the candidates of the National Freedom Front yesterday. The Minister presented their election oath and the manifesto to the sacred tooth relic and the Mahanayakes on the occasion.

“The MoC is one of the landmines fixed by the previous government against the country. After signing such an agreement with foreign countries, we have to deal carefully with them to step out from then while protecting the inter-state relations,” he said. He said that the government still has not conducted any discussion with regard to the MoC with India or Japan. “We believe that a strong government formed by us would be able to remove this landmine against the country,” he added.

Weerawansa said that a stable government formed after the upcoming general election will take due action to save the country from all the landmine-like agreements such as the MCC.
