Handunnetti requests Government’s reports regarding MCC

Former MP Sunil Handunnetti, in a letter to President's Secretary, Dr. P.B. Jayasundera, has requested the reports regarding the Government’s plans to enter into the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Agreement with the United States (US).

Handunnetti has requested to know the final recommendations of the Cabinet-appointed Committee to study the MCC agreement, and the veracity of reports that the government was to sign a new version of the agreement.

“About six months have passed since the Committee was appointed, but the public has not been made aware of its final report. Following the submission of an interim report, Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Bandula Gunawardena said that the agreement would not be signed in its current version, as some of its clauses were harmful to the country's sovereignty and Constitution,” the former MP said.

“Gunawardena said the government was ready to discuss with US authorities about the revision of the said clauses; this suggests that the government has not fully abandoned the plan to sign it,” he added.
