The government implemented another phase of its housing project to build 40,000 new units for shanty dwellers in Colombo recently.

This housing complex with 300 units will be constructed in Obeysekarapura, Rajagiriya on the instructions of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Funded by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), these 300 units of 550 square feet each will be built at a cost of Rs. 1,723.24 million.

Constructions are expected to be finished within two-and-a-half-years by a private construction firm under the direct supervision of the Urban Development Authority (UDA).

The preliminary project to build 60,000 housing units for shanty dwellers in Colombo and suburbs was launched by the then State Defence and Urban Development Ministry before 2015. Only 20,000 units were completed during that period on the directions of the then Secretary to the Ministry Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Secretary to the Urban Development, Water Supply and Housing Facilities Ministry Dr. Priyath Bandu Wickrama, UDA Chairman Harshana De Silva and UDA DG Prasad Ranaweera participated in the brief launching ceremony held in Rajagiriya.
