SJB, NPP seek meetings with Elections Commission

Jathika Samagi Balawegaya (SJB) Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara yesterday wrote to National Election Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya asking to summon a Party Leaders’ Meeting to discuss about holding the General Election.

In the letter, the SJB has opined that holding a free and fair election was impossible before June 2 due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Observing that the dangers posed by the coronavirus were still prevalent, the SJB has stressed that this was not the appropriate time to conduct an election.

The SJB has pointed out that the Election Commission’s request from the President to seek the Supreme Court opinion on the matter was correct.

National People’s Power (NPP) Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake also wrote to Deshapriya on Tuesday seeking a meeting with the Commission to discuss the matters of holding the General Election.

It has also expressed its concerns that holding the General Election amidst the coronavirus pandemic was an obstruction to democracy and a free and fair election. The NPP in its letter has requested an early date and time for the NPP candidates to meet the Commission members.
