GMOA submits proposals for containing COVID-19

The Government Medical Officers Association yesterday made five proposals to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa for preventing the spread of COVID-19 in the country.

The GMOA in letter to the President has proposed the shutdown all ports of entry, extension of the public holidays to cover the entire week and the prevention of unnecessary movement and gatherings of people.

The Association’s Executive Committee has made these proposals after having carefully studied the experiences in China and Singapore in controlling the pandemic. It has also stressed the importance of having centrally coordinated and vigorous measures for contact tracing, monitoring and utilizing government officials at grassroots level.

Provision of adequate protection to healthcare staff and postponement of all non emergency healthcare services in Government hospitals are also among the GMOA proposals. “Studies have shown that an 80 per cent contact tracing is absolutely necessary for preventing the spread of the present pandemic.”

“Furthermore, containing the disease is the only path available to our country as our ICU services, including ventilator support, which is necessary to treat patients with advanced COVID 19, is already at maximum utilization with virtually no reserve,” the letter to the President said.
