Under the instructions of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Urban Development Ministry has launched several development projects to boost Nuwara Eliya’s tourism during the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year.

The Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council is also assisting the Ministry in the project, a communiqué issued by the Urban Development Ministry stated.

Gymnasiums and walking paths have already been set up around Gregory Lake under the project, and boat and horse rides have also been included.

Nuwara Eliya Urban Development Authority (UDA) Deputy Director Ranjith Bandara said that the Gregory Lake is to be developed under five phases. He added that measures have been taken to prevent adverse effects on the environmental.

Furthermore, sanitary facilities, as well as restaurants small- and medium-scale shops, are also to be set up in the area, Bandara said, adding that the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council would see the water supply and garbage disposal facilities.

The Deputy Director also said that no large-scale constructions are to be set up under ‘Phase V’ of the project.

“We don’t expect to earn any revenue through large-scale hotels and resorts. Our main goal is to provide a pleasing environment to local and foreign tourists while protecting the ecosystem,” he added.
