Work on Nakulugamuwa railway station commences

Sri Lanka Railways commenced the work on a new railway station in Nakulugamuwa on the Matara-Beliatta railway line based on the request made by people in the area.

Power and Energy and Passenger Transport Management Minster Mahinda Amaraweera yesterday laid the foundation stone for a new railway station in Nakulugamuwa.

Accordingly, the project is expected to be completed by the end of this year at a cost of Rs.8 million.

People in the Nakulugamuwa area faced severe difficulties without a railway station in their area even though trains operate along the Matar-Beliatta railway line nearest to the village. This is the fulfillment of the long-felt need of the people in the area.

Addressing the gathering at a ceremony, Minister Amaraweera said, the present government has realized the importance of strengthening the public transport system in order to reduce the traffic congestion in suburban areas.

“Therefore, it is necessary to increase confidence among the people on the strong public transport in order to prevent the entering of private vehicles to the roads. It has been estimated that one train can carry the total number of passengers carried by 30 buses and the modernizing of the railway service is the best solution to reduce traffic congestion,” he further said.
