Former Cambrian cricketer Sripal Silva passes away at 59

Former Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa cricketer Sripal Silva passed away yesterday succumbing to injuries sustained in a motor accident some time ago. He was 59 at the time of his death and was bedridden after the accident.

An outstanding schoolboy cricketer, he received Sri Lanka Schools cricket colours in the late 70s.

Silva was a fine paceman in school and at inter-club cricket. He claimed a record 97 wickets in a season in 1979 when Ranjan Madugalle was the best batsman. Silva also excelled as a batsman having the unique distinction of scoring the first century at De Zoysa Stadium in Moratuwa.

He was the leading paceman in the P. Sara Trophy inter-club season in 1980 with 93 wickets. He represented SSC, Saracens, Moratuwa SC and Panadura SC in 135 matches and claimed 587 wickets.

He joined Bank of Ceylon in 1981 and also captained the team. He represented the Nationalised Services Cricket Association team in 1981 and holds the record of claiming 9 wickets for 51 runs in an innings.

A good administrator, he was a former secretary of Bank of Ceylon and Nationalised Services Cricket Association.

Silva was a match referee in domestic tournaments until his untimely demise.

His final rites will take place on Saturday 29 February at 5pm from Alubomulla General Cemetery, Panadura.

His remains lie at his residence at No. 27/A, Mahabellala Thotupala Road, Alubomulla, Panadura.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
