Nelson Mendis completes 60 years of coaching

CCC School of Cricket was founded by Nelson Mendis, on the 2nd February 1998, on the kind invitation of two senior members of the CCC (Gymkhana Club) who were two Nalanda College cricketers-Messer’s Thilanga Sumathipala and Shammi Silva (present Chairman of CCC). Nelson Mendis School is celebrating its 21st Anniversary, on 20th January 2020 at the Nalanda College Auditorium commencing at 6.30 pm.

The FELICITATION CEREMONY which coincides with Mr Mendis’s 82nd birthday, is held by Nalanda College Past Cricketers Association together with some of his former colleagues at Singer Sri Lanka.

Although this school had humble beginnings, with 6 boys and a coach, it has mushroomed into 300 students and 10 coaches at present, which is incredible. At the beginning they practised on a cement wicket where the Shopping Complex, the Gymnasium and the Swimming Pool is situated at present. The CCC school’s cement wicket had to be demolished due to infrastructure development at the CCC and then it shifted to the indoor nets where it functioned for five years, and thereafter to the present location.

The school caters for both boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 18 years. The coaching staff is dedicated, committed and focussed having two senior coaches with over 12 years’ experience. They too have two lady coaches who have represented Sri Lanka in cricket.

The school Motto is quite appropriate for all concerned. “ The Disciplined are the Noblest off Men,” carries an important message to all the students, and today Discipline with a capitol ‘D’ is a vital ingredient in the conduct of the affairs in the school. All aspects of the game, inclusive of traditions, spirit and laws of the game and importantly the cricket etiquette have been given “pride of place” in the school curriculum.

Mr Mendis has an excellent track record, he has coached the following Nalandian cricketers who have represented Sri Lanka at Cricket; Bandula Warnapura Lalith Kaluperuma (late) Sunil Jayasinghe Keerthi Ranasinghe (late) Anura Ranasinghe (late) Roshan Gunaratne Susantha Karunaratne Hemantha Devapriya Yohan Gunasekera Roshan Mahanama Asanka Gurusinghe Kumar Dharmasena Chamara Dunusinghe Sanath Kaluperuma Jayantha Seneviratne Gamini Wickremasinghe Apart from the above Nalandians, he too has coached Hashan Thilakeratne and Pubudu Dissanayake of D.S.Senanayake College.
