Visitors allowed to feed Zoo animals

Visitors to the National Zoological Gardens in Dehiwala are now allowed to feed the animals with permitted foods, Assistant Director Dinushika Manawadu said.

The authorities of the zoo have taken this decision to prevent visitors engaging in the unlawful feeding of the animals, she said.

Those who are interested in feeding the animals can make a payment to the ticket counter and contribute to the permitted portion of a meal for any animal, she said.

No outside food is allowed to be given to the animals under this method and only the food issued by the zoo will be allowed, the Assistant Director said.

She also said that steps have been taken to ensure hygiene as it is mandatory for the visitors to use gloves when offering food to the animals.

However, the payments for food should be made before 12 noon every day, she said.
